  • Dr Phillip Artemi pioneers introduction to Australia of melanocyte transplantation surgery in vitiligo

After extensive training in Belgium, Canada and India, Dr Artemi in 2016 performed Australia’s first autologous melanocyte transplantation for the treatment of Vitiligo.

    vitiligo news

The surgical procedure involves taking a small amount of normal skin from a patient with Vitiligo and then preparing the skin in a specialized laboratory before separating the pigment cells (melanocytes) and creating a cell suspension that is then transplanted back into the Vitiligo skin of patients after appropriate preparation of the donor site

The procedure works best in stable vitiligo of the face and neck region where repigmentation on average occurs in greater than 90% of patients
